Germ 216, Early German Cinema

Course Home | Schedule | Course Material | Assessments | Course Links

Course Description

As well as exploring the themes of early German films, this course examines the techniques and concepts introduced by this new medium and how these were developed from the silent films of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century to the political appropriation of film in the Weimar Republic and under the Nazis.  The films cover genres as wide apart as the futurist/sci-fi (Metropolis) and the political (National Socialist – Triumph, and Communist – Kuhle Wampe), and a quick glance at some of the subjects throws up the following: two supernatural beings, at least one vampire, one robot, two femmes fatales, and a suicide...  It'll be fun!
