Ambleside and Lake District

Ambleside lies on the edge of Lake Windermere in the centre of the English Lake District and is surrounded by spectacular scenery. The meeting is being held at the Ambleside campus of St Martin's College. This is a small study campus with good facilities but in a rural setting. The local economy is divided between sheep rearing and tourism. Within easy reach of the conference venue there are many walks in the countryside/hills.

There is the lake for boating, anything from rowing boats to full size public transport steamers plying the lake. The site was already important in roman times (during the first European Union) and the remains of the roman fort of GALAVA in the town are worth a visit (from the time of government preoccupations with religious fundamentalist druid terrorists).

More information on, and views of, Ambleside can be found at www.amblesideonline.co.uk, and more information about the college itself at www.ucsm.ac.uk. The Ambleside campus page has a link to a map of the local area.
