Potential dissertation supervisors

Members of the teaching staff of the institute potentially available as dissertation supervisors are listed here, along with some details about their interests, to help you to think about who to contact with regard to finding a supervisor or getting informal help with a specific topic. If you are not sure then do contact your convenor who can help with suggestions.

Alison Stone

I am interested in supervising MA dissertations in the broad areas of continental philosophy, feminist philosophy and the history of modern philosophy, including where these areas relate to environmental philosophy (for example, different conceptions of nature; ecofeminism; how different historical ideas in ethics and aesthetics bear on our relation to nature). I also have interests in some areas of literary theory, including psychoanalysis. I would be best for supervising dissertations which veer towards the 'theoretical' end of the spectrum.

Brian Garvey

Brian's main interests are philosophy of science, philosophy of biology, psychoanalysis and philosophy of mind. He has in recent years developed an interest in Heidegger, and is working on projects applying Heidegger's ideas to some or all of the above areas.

Cain Todd

Cain's primary research interests are in analytic aesthetics, metaphysics and philosophy of mind. Currently working on issues surrounding the imagination, particularly in relation to aesthetic judgement, notions of value, and epistemology. Other interests include environmental ethics and philosophy of technology (focusing on nanotechnology).

David Archard

Main interests are in social, political, legal and applied moral philosophy. He has published on Marxism and existentialism, the concept of the unconscious, children, and sexual consent. His present research interests are in political philosophy.

Garrath Williams

Moral and political philosophy; history of philosophy (Hobbes, Kant, Nietzsche, Hannah Arendt); philosophy of responsibility; political theory of institutions. Interests in applied ethics include the collection and storage of genetic materials (biobanks).

Neil Manson

Philosophy of mind, philosophy of psychology, epistemology and the philosophical views of Nietzsche, Freud and Wittgenstein.

Applied philosophy, especially the ethics of communication and information; informed consent; data protection; the nature and significance of genetic information and genetic knowledge.

Rachel Cooper

Rachel works mainly on problems in the philosophy of science and medicine. In particular, at the moment, she is interested in the following issues: the nature of health and disease; philosophy of psychiatry; classification; laws, properties and kinds in the social sciences; thought experiments; how traditional philosophy of science should make sense of the claims made by sociologists of scientific knowledge. Rachel can also supervise topics on philosophy of biology and conceptual issues related to conservation.

Sean Crawford

My chief research interests lie in philosophy of mind and language and focus on problems surrounding intentionality, singular reference, demonstrative thought, propositional attitudes, rationality, perception, psychological explanation and psychological laws. My teaching interests include philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, metaphysics, epistemology, logic, and the history of modern and contemporary analytical philosophy.
