Defying Dementia

Raising funds and awareness for dementia research in Lancaster University’s Division of Biomedical Sciences.

Dementia — most commonly Alzheimer’s disease — is a devastating set of conditions, affecting both those diagnosed and their families. A diagnosis marks the start of an immense emotional and physical journey, highlighting the urgent need for research into treatments and drug development.

Defying Dementia is a community-supported campaign that brings together donors, volunteers, the Defying Dementia shop in Lancaster, and the Defying Dementia Student Society to support the researchers at Lancaster University who are working to understand, treat, and ultimately prevent dementia.

Defying Dementia: Continuing a Legacy of Discovery

Our Research

Our work at Lancaster University builds on the pioneering research of Professor David Allsop (1953–2021) — a renowned neuroscientist and one of the first to uncover the link between amyloid plaques in the brain and Alzheimer’s disease.

Before his passing in March 2021, David and his team began developing a new treatment designed to dissolve the toxic protein clumps that cause brain cell damage in Alzheimer’s. His discoveries continue to guide our mission today.

The Defying Dementia research team is proud to carry forward David’s legacy:

  • Dr Ed Parkin explores how protective brain proteins fight Alzheimer’s.
  • Dr Cheryl Hawkes investigates how to improve nerve-cell communication and blood flow in the brain.
  • Dr Neil Dawson, who worked closely with David, is developing combined treatments to target both amyloid beta and tau proteins.
  • Dr Shefeeq Theparambil studies how astrocytes — the brain’s housekeeping cells — influence disease progression.

Together, we’re building on David’s groundbreaking work to find new treatments that could slow or even stop Alzheimer’s disease.

Your support can help us make that breakthrough possible.
