Head of Department's Welcome

John Schad, Head of DepartmentWe are a high-ranking and thriving community of eminent literary critics and prize-winning poets and novelists with a shared passion for teaching.  We place enormous emphasis on the undergraduate experience which is built on close seminar contact with academic staff.  Our weekly seminar groups normally include no more than 10 to 12 students; and this, along with the opportunity for regular one-to-one essay tutorials, is a major factor in our students’ success - last year, one in four achieved first-class degrees.

We also offer a host of extra-curricular opportunities including regular visits from guest authors, student-led  publications, subsidised theatre trips, a range of reading and/or writing groups, and various in-house careers events led by visitors from the worlds of publishing, broadcasting, writing, and beyond.

We hope this website will begin to introduce you to us as a Department.  For details of visit days etc, please just e-mail

We look forward to meeting you.

All very best wishes,

John Schad
Professor of Modern Literature and Head of Department
