PhD/MPhil Admissions

Entry Requirements

To be considered for admission applicants should supply:

  • Completed application form
  • Certified Copies of academic transcripts from all post-secondary study institutions.
  • Two letters of recommendation (at least one should specifically comment on applicant's suitability for chosen course). Letters might be sent by referees directly to the department
  • Outline of research interests/reasons for application for course
  • Certificate of proficiency in English (whose native language is not English) - TOEFL - 580, IELTS - 6.5, CCP - Grade C

Research applicants applying for a PhD or MPhil should give a brief outline of research topic or interests.

Applicants for allocated studentships from Research Councils in the UK should give the title of the project and should indicate any previous experience which is relevant.

There is no strict deadline and you may apply at any time. However, it is advised to apply as early as you can, especially if you are applying from overseas. Please note that studentships, scholarships and other awards usually have deadlines. In order to be considered for financial aid you are normally required to apply to the University.

How to Apply

You will need to apply online and submit a proposal. Applications need to be accompanied by a concise research proposal of about 3000 words. The proposal should include a clear statement on the question or issues to be researched, the existing literature and/or debates on the question, what is special or original about this work, what methods will be used, and an outline of fieldwork if relevant. A short indicative bibliography should also be included.

We strongly recommend that you make initial contact with a prospective supervisor before you finish and submit your proposal.

Download guidance about the contents and structure of your proposal.
