Visiting MA and PhD Students

students chattingThe department welcomes applications from PhD and MA students registered at other Universities at home and abroad to come to Lancaster for short periods as visiting students. If you are interested we would encourage you to discuss this possibility informally with a staff member before submitting an application (this is not essential, but your application will need to be accepted by a staff member).

The foregoing does not include applications from SOCRATES/ERASMUS exchange students. For details of exchange programmes please visit Lancaster's Exchange pages.

To make an application you will need to send us the following:

  • A completed University of Lancaster online postgraduate application form
  • A current curriculum vitae
  • Photocopies of relevant academic certificates (under certain circumstances we might ask for these to be validated)
  • A covering letter explaining:
    a) what you hope to do while you are at Lancaster (courses to be attended, any individual supervision requests, research to be done, etc)
    b) the period when you hope to be here
  • Two letters of support from referees who know your academic work
  • For non-native English speakers only: documentation of your competence in English

Once we have received these we will make a decision about your application as soon as possible.

Once you are accepted you have all the rights and privileges of a postgraduate student at Lancaster including: the right to attend MA courses.

For visiting PhD students

  • students chattingyou may be able to take Faculty Research Training courses
  • membership of and borrowing rights from the library
  • an email account and access to networked computers
  • the right to attend departmental seminars, colloquia and other activities

Supervision for visiting research students is by academic staff who has/have agreed to accept you.

Please note that if you wish to attend the MA and Faculty course modules you should time your visit so that it falls during the autumn and the spring terms when the majority of those modules are being taught.
