Research Interests

I am a social theorist and sociologist. My research is concerned with social inequalities (of multiple kinds), power, injustice and resistance. A Philip Leverhulme Prize (2015-2018) is supporting my current research project on stigma. The major outcomes of this project will be a Sociological Review special issue/monograph on 'The Sociology of Stigma' (2017) edited with Tom Slater, a single-authored book provisonally entitled 'Stigma Machines' (in progress), & a series of peer-reviewed journal articles. From the research for this project Dr Tracey Jensen and I have developed a new final yr. UG course, Welfare States: Histories and Futures, which we will be teaching Autumn 2017.

In 2014 I was awarded a Lancaster University Staff prize for 'Oustanding Research in the area of Inequalities'. In 2010 I was awarded a Leverhulme Research Fellowship and the outcome of this fellowship was the monograph Revolting Subjects: Social Abjection and Resistance in Neoliberal Britain (2013) which was shortlisted for the Bread and Roses Prize for Radical Publishing.
