Topic 8 "tool" summary

  • In this topic we have explored how viewpoint is encoded and manipulated in texts.

  • We have looked at how the discourse structure of the novel makes it the most complex literary genre in viewpoint terms and how large-scale narratorial and structural choices affect viewpoint generally.

  • We have also seen that there are a number of different kinds of point of view (spatial, temporal, social, ideological etc)and we have explored how particular kinds of linguistic construction constitute viewpoint indicators in texts.

  • We have also examined how viewpoint manipulation affects our attitudes to what we read about and how viewpoint can be changed, sometimes very subtly, using the viewpoint indicators.

Don't forget to do the reading.

The more you read what others say,
the less you will have a restricted view on viewpoint!
