Exploring Perceptions of 'Quality' Cord Blood in Stem Cell Treatments

Background to the project

When a baby is born, the blood from the umbilical cord contains stem cells, which can be collected and stored. The cord blood can be used instead of bone marrow to treat patients with leukaemia, sickle cell anaemia, or thalassaemia.

Such umbilical cord blood collection, banking and treatments are relatively novel in the UK and Japan compared to other countries, such as Spain and America. As a result, much of the policy and practices related to cord blood collection, banking and treatments are still being developed in Japan and the UK.

A particular focus of emerging policies and practices is what influences the 'quality' of cord blood, and the success of stem cell treatments. Consequently, exploring perceptions of 'quality' cord blood is an important field of study for Japanese and UK policy makers, cord blood collectors, donors and bankers, haematologists, immunologists, and oncologists.

Research Questions

This project will explore what makes a 'quality' cord blood unit for those working in transplant centres and what factors influence their perceptions.

In particular, do those working in transplant centres deem the collection and banking processes as influencing the 'quality' of cord blood units? What policies and practices are considered by those working in transplant centres as facilitating a 'quality' cord blood collection? How do those in transplant centres decide which banks to import a cord blood unit from?

Finally, do the notions of 'quality' in cord blood collection, banking and transplant differ across countries like Japan and the UK?

Methodology
方法

Qualitative, semi-structured interviews will be conducted face-to-face with those working in transplant centres in the UK and Japan.

Survey data will also be collected from those involved in cord blood treatments in the UK and Japan.
