EAP course at Lancaster University:

I was fortunate enough to be a part of the EAP (English for Academic Purposes) program offered by Lancaster University, in September 2019. It was a one month course, offered to international students lacking some critical skills in English to complete their degree programs. Furthermore, it was aimed to make everyone comfortable in Lancaster’s weather and get familiar with the surrounding areas.

The class was diverse and friendly. I had never attended any course full of international students coming from Thailand, China, India, Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, and many more. Moreover, our majors were different, like Computer Science, Humanities, Finance, Marketing, Linguistics, Engineering, and Management.

We had four core modules: Academic Reading and Writing, Listening Comprehension, Speaking Skills, and Language Development. These were taught by the distinguishing lecturer of the linguistic department. In the Language Development module, each group had to make a poster, which our group made on the Hyperloop. It is a new technology which can revolutionise the future of transportation industry around the globe. Hyperloop is a vacuum tube in which capsules are transported with very little friction and without any air resistance. Therefore, these are very fast and efficient. Other students made amazing posters on Amazon Go, Google Smart Glasses, Self Driving Car, Huawei mobiles.

In the Speaking Skills modules, we made a remarkable presentation on the type of bread consumed in the UK, China, Thailand and India. It amazed us when we found that there are more than ten thousand types of bread consumed in the world daily. In addition, we had to submit an Academic essay on every Monday. In the end, it was rigorous and rewarding.

We visited the city of Liverpool, Manchester and Chester at the weekends. It was organised by the university staffs.

The help provided by the EAP course did not only enrich our language skills, but it also boosted our confidence to undertake our degree programs. It was a fantastic experience. I will always recommend it to each International student, irrespective of their English language proficiency level.
