Applications and Funding

AHRC awards

Lancaster University is part of a North West consortium that has been successful in winning over £14million funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council; this funding will provide 40 PhD awards each year across the consortium for the next 5 years, beginning in 2014-15. The Department of European Languages and Cultures (DELC) is pleased to invite applications for AHRC awards. The Department also welcomes cross-disciplinary applications which combine issues relating to language and culture with another discipline (available in one of the following participating departments):
·         Art History (LICA)
·         Arts Management, Library and Museum Studies (LICA)
·         Chinese (Department of Linguistics & English Language)
·         Creative Writing (Department of English & Creative Writing)
·         Cultural Studies (Department of Sociology)
·         Drama, Theatre, Dance (LICA)
·         English (Department of English & Creative Writing)
·         History (Department of History)
·         Law (School of Law)
·         Linguistics (Department of Linguistics & English Language)
·         Media and Communication (LICA)
·         Modern Languages (DELC)
·         Philosophy (Department of PPR)
·         Religious Studies (Department of PPR)
·         Translation Studies (Department of Linguistics & English Language)
·         Visual Arts: Arts and Design (LICA)

Awards will include MA plus PhD funding and PhD funding. Please contact the Director of Postgraduate Studies, Dr Nick Hodgin (, for more information about the awards and the supervision the department can offer.

The deadline for applications for 2014-15 is 21 February 2014. Students should normally have been offered a place at Lancaster prior to submitting their AHRC studentship application. The department offers a wide range of research expertise and staff welcome enquiries from prospective postgraduate students.
