Faculty Members - I'd just like to make faculty members aware of the Work in Progress series run by IPPP which allows staff and postgrads to present a 30 minute paper which is then followed by 30 minutes for discussion. The papers are held inC26 Furness (1-2pm) on alternate weeks beginning on the 17th October.
The first paper this term is being given by Dr Rachel Cooper on 'Problems with Policing Testimony in Science' any further enquiries or requests for the full schedule should be addressed to me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Dr Rachel Cooper
'Problems with Policing Testimony in Science'
'Evidence suggests that pharmaceutical companies massage the published results of drug trials in psychiatry. Using ideas from Schaffer and Shapin, I argue that one of the prime problems a science needs to solve is how to police testimony, and I examine how it is that there have come to be problems with the reporting of scientific results within psychiatry. I then look at the ways testimony is policed in other areas - ranging from Boyle's Royal Society to wikipedia - and consider how the problems with the reporting of drug trial data might be overcome.'
The dates for the others this term are

14th Nov - Garrath Williams - 'Can't and Won't: Understanding Attributions of Responsible Agency
28th Nov - Bjorn Myskja - ' Religion and Rationality in Biomedical Debate'
