IAS Workshop - Cultural Political Economy of the KBE

Date: 30 November - 1 December 2005

The "knowledge-based economy" is a term that has entered into many different fields of social life. It has become almost hegemonic as a way of thinking about the contemporary economy and is actively promoted by transnational bodies (such as the OECD, the World Bank, the EU, and UNESCO) as well as national, regional, urban, and local stakeholders. It has implications for other fields of social life too - reflected in ideas and practices such as lifelong learning, knowledge transfer, intellectual property, expert systems in the professions, and the digital divide. This workshop is concerned with the pre-history of the "KBE" discourse in notions such as the post-industrial economy or information society, its origins as a specific discourse, its dissemination and eventual superiority over alternative accounts of the contemporary economy, its translation into policy paradigms and economic and political strategies, and the contradictions and dilemmas with which the "KBE" discourses are associated.
