LICA Seminar Series 2009: Anahid Kassabian

Date: 11 February 2009 Time: 4.30 pm

LICA Seminar Series 2009.

Speaker: Anahid Kassabian, University of Liverpool.

Venue: Lancaster University, Bowland North, Seminar Room 10.

Listening is a much underthought category in music and cultural studies scholarship, although there are signs that it is finally becoming an area of study. This talk draws connections between listening and contemporary theories of affect, and argues that listening has a privileged place in the construction of a subjectivity that consists of both humans and machines in a dense and lumpy network.

Bio: Anahid Kassabian's research and teaching focus on film music, ubiquitous music, disciplinarity, and listening. She's the author of Hearing Film and co-editor of Music, Sound, and the Moving Image, a past chair of IASPM and a past editor of Journal of Popular Music Studies. Her talk today is from her current research project tentatively entitled The Soundtracks of Our Lives: Ubiquitous Music and Distributed Subjectivity, which is forthcoming from University of California Press.
