Jan Toporowski - "Causes and Consequences of the Financial Crisis"

Date: 20 May 2009 Time: 6.30pm

The IAS Lecture series continues with an examination of the Causes and Consequences of the Financial Crisis.

6.30pm in meeting rooms 2 & 3 of the IAS Building.

All welcome

The present crisis is the consequence of asset inflation in the housing and financial markets. This gave rise to serious structural imbalances in the financial system. When a problem of illiquidity emerged, asset inflation turned into deflation, and a problem of excess debt arose. The elimination of inflation in the real economy, inequalities of wealth and income, and new techniques of risk management have made the situation worse. We now face debt deflation and reduced credit in the future.
