J.L. Austin Centenary Conference

Date: 5-7 April 2011

Venue: Faraday Building, Frankland and Cavendish Colloquia

2011 is the centenary year of the birth (in Lancaster) of the philosopher J.L. Austin. To mark this event, the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion at Lancaster University will be hosting a conference on Austin on April 5th to 7th.

Papers will cover a wide range of Austin-related topics, including speech-act theory, linguistics, and legal theory. Speakers include:

Professor John Searle (Berkeley)

Professor Jennifer Saul (Sheffield)

Professor Paul Snowdon (UCL)

The cost of registering for the conference is £50, which includes morning and evening coffee and lunch. Accommodation is available on campus for the nights of April 4th, 5th and 6th and costs £40 per night, including breakfast. You can pay the registration fee and book accommodation here:

There will be a conference dinner in the Lancaster House Hotel on the evening of Tuesday April 5th. This costs £33 for a three-course table d'hôte dinner, and you can also book your place for this using the link above.

Attendance at this conference (but not the conference dinner) is free for staff and students of Lancaster University. If you are a Lancaster staff member or student, you do not need to register for the conference, but you should e-mail Brian Garvey ( and tell him that you want to attend.
