Date: 6 June 2012 Time: 3.30-5.00 pm

Venue: Bowland North SR 25

The Second Language Learning and Teaching (SLLAT) research group are pleased to announce the following talk:

Formulaic language in the second language acquisition of Turkish-speaking children in a German kindergarten: Methods of data collection and analysis

Sonja Altmuller

The aim of this study is to reconstruct the processes of young children's SLA. The focus is the role of formulaic language in this development. Throughout a period of 22 months data was collected through audio recordings which consisted of conversations between and with small groups of children (3-5 years old) and activities such as looking at books and playing. The recordings were conducted with each child at monthly intervals in an informal setting. This method was combined with participant observation, which was carried out within the nursery group once a week. This presentation deals with the methods of data collection and data analysis. First results of one case study will be presented.
