Demand Seminar, Richard Hanna, Installer businesses and renewable energy uptake in homes

Date: 18 December 2013 Time: 16.00-17.30 pm

Venue: FASS Meeting Room 7

Installer businesses and renewable energy uptake in homes, Richard Hanna, University of Reading.

Who installs small scale renewable energy and micro-generation technologies in UK homes? What kinds of businesses are involved and how do they operate? This seminar reports on a survey of 400 microgeneration installer businesses and repeat follow up interviews with a sub sample of respondents. The results revealed an emerging and volatile market where solar PV, solar hot water and air source heat pumps were the dominant technologies. Most installers were very small: around half had five employees or less, or were no more than four years old. The research raises key questions about the progress of microgeneration as a niche market, and the capacity of this niche to respond to broader changes at the regime and landscape levels of socio-technical transition systems.
