PaSty talk by Geoffrey Leech on Gricean pragmatics and politeness

Date: 22 January 2014 Time: 16.00 pm

Venue: Bowland North B22

Why good old Gricean pragmatics is still relevant to politeness

Geoffrey Leech (Lancaster University)

ABSTRACT - In this talk I revisit the treatment of politeness in Chapters 5 and 6 of Principles of Pragmatics(Leech 1983), run through the various criticisms that have been made of it, and how far I do or do not agree with them. I then present a new version of the same model of politeness, which I like to call a model of "communicative altruism". I still believe in politeness maxims, although I have changed them somewhat. I also make use of default reasoningto argue that the prevalent view that we cannot say anything about politeness unless we know everything about the context is unnecessarily pessimistic.
