World top 100 for Languages and Cultures at Lancaster

Modern Languages QS Ranking by Subject 2024

Modern Language study at Lancaster University has been once again ranked within the top 100 in the World according to the QS World Rankings by Subject 2024. Updated each year, the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 are based on analysis of the reputation and research output of almost 5,000 institutions around the globe. This year, from this group of 5,000, 1,561 were ranked across 55 narrow subjects and five broad subject areas, creating more than 19,100 entries.

Rising to 72nd place from joint 85th last year, the Department of Languages and Cultures at Lancaster has consistently been a high performer in global and national league tables and has been at the forefront of innovative languages and cultures teaching and research for decades.

Whether making a difference in the lives of people with albinism or helping improve conservation and environmental education practices, Lancaster’s Top 100 Department of Languages and Cultures brings global languages and cultures expertise to bear on key challenges in societies.

Dr Derek Hird, the Head of the Department of Languages and Cultures, said: "Through languages and cultures we bring a global, interdisciplinary perspective to real-world problems, finding ways to work together across borders and disciplines to help solve global challenges. This outstanding result is due to the vision, talent, and hard work of colleagues in all our areas of expertise, including Italian, German, Chinese, French, Spanish, and translation.
