Ness-ays

Stereotypical EnglishmanWe were interested in the FLAs' cultural preconceptions about their destination country, in case they influenced the way they responded to the experience of spending time immersed in that culture.  Because this is potentially a sensitive issue, we wanted Stereotypical Frenchmanto avoid 'leading' the FLAs, i.e. giving them any guidance about what to say, so that they could feel completely free to express themselves in any way they wished. To this end we simply told them to write 500 words or thereabouts on 'Frenchness' or 'Englishness'. The resultant 'Ness'ays have been transcribed and are downloadable here.
