The Athena SWAN charter aims to improve gender equality within higher education; its awards recognise institutions and academic departments that are committed to the advancement of gender equality in academia, work to address unequal gender representation across academic disciplines (including professional and support functions) and aim to remove the obstacles faced by women in the sector. The Bronze Award demonstrates that we have a solid foundation for eliminating gender bias and developing an inclusive culture that values all staff.
Dr Nadia Mazza, chair of the Department’s Equality and Diversity committee expressed her delight at the achievement, saying “It is fantastic to be awarded an Athena SWAN Bronze award, which recognises the Department's commitment to promoting equality and diversity. The successful application is the result of enlightening and collaborative team work."
Professor Andrey Lazarev, Head of Department said "I am very pleased that we have achieved an Athena SWAN Bronze Award. This is a testament to our ongoing commitment to promoting gender equality and family-friendly practices and a result of hard work of the departmental Athena SWAN team over the last two years."
This is a significant achievement for Mathematics & Statistics and we will continue to strive towards promoting equality and respecting diversity amongst both our staff and students over the coming years.
