Event Details

Join the Work Foundation & Lancaster University for the inaugural Work and Health Summit bringing together leaders from policy, business and academia to tackle one of the greatest labour market challenges of our generation – supporting people with health conditions to stay in and get back into work.

Healthier jobs to tackle economic inactivity

The new Government has set an ambitious target to raise the employment rate to 80% – which would represent an increase of approximately two million more people in work than today. Achieving this target is critical to the Government’s wider goals of growing the economy, balancing the public finances and improving living standards across the country.

However, in reality, the UK faces a number of health-related workforce challenges that will make realising this ambition particularly difficult. Since the beginning of 2020, the number of people who have left the labour market altogether due to long-term illness has risen by nearly 700,000 and now sits at over 2.8 million.

Confirmed speakers:

  • Sir Charlie Mayfield (leading Government Keep Britain Working Review and former Chairman of John Lewis Partnership)
  • Rt Hon Chloe Smith (President, CIPD and former Secretary of State for Work and Pensions)
  • Dame Clare Moriarty (Chief Executive, Citizens Advice)
  • Rt Hon Alan Milburn (Chancellor, Lancaster University and former Secretary of State for Health)
  • Professor Stavroula Leka (Professor of Organisations, Work & Health, Lancaster University)
  • Fiona Monahan (Chief Executive, Ingeus UK).

Further speakers will be announced in due course.
