Join the Work Foundation at Lancaster University as we unpack the latest labour market and inflation data from the ONS.
The UK labour market has come under pressure in 2026. Unemployment is at 4.9%, vacancies have fallen to their lowest level outside the pandemic since 2014 and inflation has also risen above 3%, while pay growth has slowed.
For many workers and jobseekers, these trends are being felt unevenly. Young people face a difficult jobs market, while weak recruitment and slowing private sector pay growth are raising concerns about living standards and progression.
But 2027 will also bring significant changes. Further Employment Rights Act reforms are due to take effect, including changes to unfair dismissal, flexible working and guaranteed hours for workers on insecure contracts. Employers will need to adapt while navigating an uncertain economic outlook.
The Government has also pledged to deliver “good growth in every postcode”. Following the Budget, attention will turn to whether its economic and labour market policies can strengthen employment, raise living standards and improve the quality of work – and whether businesses will have the confidence to recruit and invest.
So could 2027 mark a turning point for workers, jobseekers and employers?
Our expert panel will assess the outlook for jobs, pay and living standards, and explore what 2027 could mean for working lives across the UK.
Speakers will be announced in due course.
The event will take place on Zoom and a link will be sent before the event.
