Solution Search Event - Can Social Work/Social Care benefit from Action Learning Sets?

Can Action Learning Sets contribute towards a greater understanding of the daily problems faced in the social work/social care world? Participants at the recent Solution Search network event certainly felt that it could as they experienced and reflected on the use of ALS in social work settings.
Twenty participants enjoyed a lively day of discussion relating to the use of action learning in a daily workplace environment on the 31st May, 2012. This was the fourth meeting of Solution Search and although the network was only established last year, it now has nearly 70 members from 50 social work/social care organizations across the North West.
The network brings together managers and practitioners working with children, young people and their families from the voluntary, private, social enterprise and statutory sectors (Child Protection Teams, Youth Offending Teams, health and education services). Using Solution Focussed Coaching, Open Space Technology and Action Learning Sets among other techniques, participants explore challenging issues and test out possible developments with their fellow network members before taking the idea 'back to the office'.
Solution Search was initiated by ASSURE (Applied Social Science Unit for Research and Evaluation) working with HAND Consultancy and developed working alongside social work and social care professionals. The network aims to offer a safe, open space in which to discuss issues, pilot ideas, consider new ways of working, reflect on the underlying theory behind everyday practice and learn about new developments in social work and social care.
