Maria J. Sanchez-Bueno and Fernando Muñoz-Bullon presenting their exciting research on Employment security, female leadership and family influence

Abstract

In this paper, we theorize that female directors favor employment insecurity, yet this does not occur in family firms as family owners prefer to maintain employment levels which is consistent with the social role expectation of women as being more caring and compassionate. We also predict that the positive effect of female directors on employment security in family firms holds only when the firm is doing well, yet the positive female effect disappears when the firm is underperforming. In addition, we expect female directors with family ties to the owning family will promote employment security in family firms. Based on a sample of publicly listed firms in the US spanning the period 2007 through 2017, we find support for our hypotheses. This article extends our understanding of how female directors influence employment security and how this influence differs depending on firm ownership.
