Category Manager, L’Oreal

I chose LUMS because of its’ leading research, and its’ engagement with entrepreneurs within the local community. I also felt that the degree programme offered a differentiating element in comparison to what I saw on offer at other business schools. Further to this, I felt that Lancaster University overall offered a good academic environment.

The element that I enjoyed most about my degree course was the interaction with the local entrepreneurs. It was really great to be able to ask them questions and understand what had driven them to pursue their own businesses. I also enjoyed participating in group work; it gives you a real insight into how to work closely with people, which has been invaluable in my career after graduation.

One of the fun aspects of university for me was definitely the opportunity to meet a diverse mix of people, and of course the student nights!

I did my yearlong placement at L’Oreal; I truly believe that this was one of the most beneficial parts of my degree (and not only because I was given a position on the graduate scheme as a result). During my placement year I developed strong business acumen, and also a better understanding of how academic learning can be applied in the workplace. For me it was also a real driver in terms of developing confidence in myself. I noticed a huge difference in terms of the work that I was producing, and my ability to present myself when I returned to Lancaster.

The LUMS Careers support services really helped me in securing a job, particularly in terms of writing a strong CV and interview techniques.

I had a great time at Lancaster University; I learnt a lot and made some friends for life!

I currently work as a Category Manager at L’Oreal following a year on the graduate scheme. I've found that skills such as: presenting, group work and the ability to utilise data to build a strong argument are applicable every day!
