Besides the unique degree structure of the BBA Management, I chose LUMS mainly for its reputation as a leading European management school and for its diverse student body and faculty, which I deemed a good preparation for a future career in an international business environment.

Being a student at LUMS is challenging but also extremely rewarding. The compulsory modules in my first year gave me an excellent introduction to the field of management by focusing on both research-oriented work as well as tackling business case studies in a team. I particularly appreciated that the staff at LUMS are always friendly and try to help you in a quick and non-bureaucratic way, should you encounter any difficulties or questions.

One of the main features of this degree is the opportunity to study abroad in the second year. Out of the wide range of available exchange partners I chose to go to the Schulich School of Business in Toronto. Schulich is consistently ranked as one of the top Canadian business schools and its location in Toronto, Canada’s economic centre and the world’s most ethnically diverse city as recognised by the UN, made it particularly appealing to me.

My time there was tremendous, both academically and socially. I made friends with local students as well as with other exchange students from various countries and was able to travel across North America quite a bit both during and after the exchange.

During my year abroad I came back to London for a week since I had a number of job interviews in preparation for my placement year. Finding a suitable work placement turned out to be easier than expected, which was partly due to the support given by the Management School, which has contacts with a multitude of top employers and kept me informed about upcoming opportunities.

I eventually decided to divide up my placement year, working six months for Accenture in London and another six months for Deloitte Consulting in Germany, which gave me exposure to two major consulting firms. With Accenture I assisted a large British bank with business process outsourcing whereas Deloitte Consulting gave me the chance to work on a finance transformation project in South Africa for three months, which was by far one of the highlights of my placement year! My role there included conducting a financial benchmarking of our client and other major players in the industry. Despite the long working hours this was a thoroughly rewarding experience, since I put my business knowledge into practice and worked alongside senior-level people from both Deloitte and our client.

Thereafter, I was accepted for a summer internship with the Transaction Advisory Services division of KPMG in Hong Kong as part of their Global Internship Scheme. This gave me the opportunity to explore a completely different and new cultural environment and the exposure to a key emerging market will certainly be of value for my future career.

I have gained enormously from studying at LUMS. I experienced first-hand that the year of studying abroad, the placement year in industry and the excellent environment at LUMS equip you with the tools and skills you need for a successful future career in management.

My next step is to study an MPhil in Innovation, Strategy & Organisation at the University of Cambridge.

Andreas is now working as a consultant for the European business advisory firm goetzpartners.
