Helen Laybourn

Country of origin: United Kingdom

Senior Consultant, BCS Consulting

I chose to study at LUMS because of its high rating in Economics and the quality of the Management School, and because of its great location near to the Lake District.

On the BSc Economics course I particularly enjoyed doing the dissertation, which allowed me to apply my subject to my interest in Africa, doing a statistical study of the effects of poor access to water and sanitation on infant mortality in South Africa.

I also enjoyed the heavy focus on maths in the core topics, which means in terms of exams there are right and wrong answers! This makes it possible to steer the course away from the more subjective essay-based assessments, and to pick up valuable business maths skills.

Besides studying for my degree, I was also involved in Lancaster Conservative Future, and was elected Social Secretary for two years running. This gave me a very busy social life, organising regular events including a ball, a Labour-Tory laser quest and football tournaments, and other socials. I also joined the Economics Society, which organised guest lectures and workshops to supplement those provided by the Management School to help students find graduate jobs.

Although it wasn't part of my degree I decided to do a summer internship after my second year. I successfully got on to the Lloyds Banking Group scheme, and worked for eight weeks as an intern in the Wealth and International department in London. This was a very valuable experience as it gave me the opportunity to develop presentation and financial modelling skills, to live and work in the City, and it ultimately ended in an offer of a place on their graduate scheme.

Before I graduated in 2010 I secured a graduate job with Deloitte as an Analyst Consultant in the Operations department. I plan to complete the graduate programme at Deloitte, which lasts for 21 months, and then I hope to stay there for a few more years and use the networks I build to find the next step, possibly working for a client.

Helen is now working as a senior consultant for BCS Consulting.
