Fee status
Your fee status category will affect the tuition fees that you will pay and also your scholarship eligibility.
Your fee status category will affect the tuition fees that you will pay and also your scholarship eligibility.
All students are categorised as either ‘home’ or ‘international’ for the purpose of tuition fees. This is your ‘fee status’. It will affect the tuition fee rate you will pay and your eligibility for certain scholarships.
The University will assess your fee status as part of the admissions process, these decisions are taken separately from academic decisions.
To find out the tuition fees for different fee status groups, please look at the individual course information page, which you can find through our undergraduate course listing and postgraduate course listing.
The University will assess your fee status in line with the regulations provided by the UK Government's Department for Education. These regulations describe which categories of student are eligible to pay Home fees. We also use the guidance provided by the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA).
UKCISA describes all the requirements a student needs to meet to fit one of the categories to be eligible for the home fee rate.
We do not use or accept any sources other than the relevant regulations and the guidance provided by UKCISA to assess a student’s fee status category.
In most cases, we are able to assign your fee status using the information on your application. However, in some cases, we will need to ask you some further questions.
If we are not able to assign you a fee status category based on the information in your application, we will email you to explain this and will ask you to complete a fee status questionnaire.
The questionnaire will ask for further information about factors such as your nationality, immigration status and your ordinary residence. The UKCISA website has useful definitions of these and other frequently used terms.
You should complete the fee status questionnaire if:
Please download the questionnaire by using the link below. The file is a Word document.
Please take time to read the questionnaire carefully. It is important to complete this as thoroughly as possible so that the University can make an accurate and quick decision.
As well as answering the questions you will need to provide evidence such as a copy of your passport photo page or other evidence of your immigration status.
If you tell us you have Settled or Pre-Settled status we will need you to provide us with a share code from the Government website so that we can verify this.
When you have completed the questionnaire, you should:
Undergraduate courses
Email it to ugadmissions@lancaster.ac.uk with a copy of your passport and any other supporting documents.
Postgraduate courses
Upload the questionnaire to your online application if you are able or alternatively email it to pgadmissions@lancaster.ac.uk with a copy of your passport and any other supporting documents.
We will email you to confirm which fee status category we have assigned to you based on all the evidence you have provided.
If you do not agree with our assessment of your fee status you can contact us for further clarification.
If you wish us to review the decision, you need to contact us with all the relevant information to evidence how you meet all the requirements for a specific fee status category as set out by UKCISA.
Although it is possible for your circumstances to change so that you stop being an ‘international’ fee payer and become a ‘home’ fee payer for the second (or later) year of your course, it is extremely unusual.
You will need to check through all the requirements of the fee status category you think you now comply with and contact us with as much information as possible to evidence this.
More information on this can be found on the UKCISA website.
If you are a current Lancaster student with a query about your fee status please contact the Admissions team for advice.
Following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, EU students are no longer eligible to pay Home fees and will pay the same fees as other international students. This change applies to students starting a course from 1 August 2021. Those who started their course before this date are not affected, and continue to pay Home fees if they have met the eligibility criteria.
EU nationals and their family members may still be eligible for Home fees in certain circumstances, for example, Irish nationals living in Ireland or the UK, and EU nationals with pre-settled or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, who have met the eligibility criteria.
More information on fee status can be found on the UKCISA website
