This double degree provides you with an international business education in an exciting two-country programme.
You will study in two prestigious universities and work in two different countries. This allows you to gain work experience in two business cultures.
On this North America variant you will study politics in your first two years at Lancaster to align with the US curriculum and to broaden your knowledge base.
In years three and four, you will study a curriculum equivalent to that in the UK, but taught at the prestigious Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, allowing you to experience the culture of that country. You will then graduate from both universities, with two degrees
This course also offers you the opportunity to become internationally adaptable as you will undertake four months of work experience in the partner country during your third or fourth year. This allows you to develop sound professional and technical knowledge alongside practical management skills, enhancing your attractiveness to prospective employers.
You will receive two degree awards: one from Lancaster and also one from the partner institution.

Business analytics focuses on developing new insights and understanding of business performance based on data analysis.
Designed to give you the kind of skills that are sought after in many organisations, this module introduces you to a range of quantitative techniques for collecting, analysing and interpreting data and develops your understanding of how to apply these techniques to management problems to draw practical conclusions. The module provides the foundations for statistical methods in follow-up modules.
The computing side of the module introduces the use of word processing, spreadsheet software for statistical calculations, and writing of management reports.
You will learn not only the fundamental analytical techniques, but also when and how to apply them to management problems and how to interpret the results. This module also involves you working as a junior business analyst on a simple but realistic case study and reporting results and conclusions to a fictional boss.
This module provides an introduction to the analysis and use of published financial statements and concepts underlying financial reporting by companies. It also considers the perspectives of various users and opportunities for creative accounting. The concepts and use of financial statements are placed within the current commercial context, so that you acquire an appreciation of the role of financial accounting.
This module introduces a variety of traditional and non-traditional ideas about management, followed by the theory and practice of team working and capability for management. Other themes include quality and entrepreneurship. The aim is to provide you with an essential understanding of the basic theories relevant to the management of work organisation and to enable you to identify and understand the limitations inherent within these theories.
This module aims to provide you with a broad introduction to management covering a wide range of topics that are relevant to work, business and organisations.
The module begins by exploring the basis of all management activities – human resource management and development which fundamentally contributes to the development of employee-engaged and productive organisations. The module is constructed to encourage you to think critically and to reflect upon taken-for-granted assumptions about the world of work and management’s role in relation to it.
As a means to achieve this, the second part of the course introduces different metaphors through which we can understand and analyse organisations.
The final part of the module continues this theme of encouraging critical reflection and explores key issues and debates related to technology, globalization, sustainability and ethics that are intimately related to management. Many of these debates and issues will be explored in greater depth in subsequent OWT modules (e.g. OWT.226 Management and Information Technology, OWT.328 Work and Employment Relations).
This module introduces students to some of the key areas of Politics and International Relations. It will provide a basic introduction and a foundation for future study, as well as expand and develop knowledge into new areas.
The module tells a story about the 20th century that enables students to make sense of the 21st century world. Beginning with the consequences of the First World War, the module introduces students to the events and ideas that have transformed societies in complex ways: the evolution of the welfare state; the problems of democracy; increasingly global formations of governance; the transformation from Cold War geopolitics to the 21st century’s War on Terror; and the emergence of new issues such as global warming, amongst a wide range of other issues.
Students are introduced to the research concerns of members of the department, as well as setting the scene for modules offered at advanced stages in the degree structure.
Students must study MKTG101 in Year 1. This year-long module serves as an introduction to the theory, tools and techniques of Marketing, teaching you all the foundational touch-points of Marketing which will be further developed in detail and depth throughout your second and final year. You will explore subject areas such as: Business-to-Business Marketing, Relationship Marketing, Services Marketing, International Marketing, and Consumer Behaviour, to Advertising, Digital Marketing and Strategic Marketing Planning.
Throughout the year, you will be asked to consider how theory works in practice, by examining your own experience of marketing as well as contexts obtained from the press and broadcast media. Part of your learning will be based on coursework; much of this will involve working in groups but you will also harness the skills of independent learning through individual course submissions.
Further to this students can choose any two subjects from across the university (subject to availability and timetabling). These subjects need not be Marketing related but some advisable and good subject fits with Marketing are: Accounting & Finance; Design; Law; Economics; Management and Organisation; Media Film and Cultural Studies; Management Sciences; Psychology; Sociology. Such flexibility allows you to choose subjects that excite you, with the ability to then continue with these into your second and final year. This enables the development of not only a strong major in Marketing but a strong minor in other subject areas that you are passionate about.
Providing a thorough introduction to the discipline of Economics, this module is divided into two parts. The first part covers microeconomic analysis, including the theory of demand, costs and pricing under various forms of industrial organisation, and welfare economics. Many applications of theoretical models are examined. The second part focuses on macroeconomic analysis, including national income analysis, monetary theory, business cycles, inflation, unemployment, and the great macroeconomic debates.
The main aim of this course is to provide students with a critical understanding of the moral foundations that shape business and management. It will examine the various perspectives through which we make sense and speak about ethics and the ways in which they influence and direct our moral choices both on an individual and an institutional level.
The delivery of this course has two main components. First, a traditional series of weekly lectures that will introduce some of the key ideas and theoretical frameworks that will help you understand the main themes and issues in business ethics. Secondly and in parallel with the lectures, there will be a series of student-led debates that aim to further explore the often complex and intractable nature of these issues.
As information covered in class often will not be found in your readings, it is to your benefit to attend class regularly. A significant portion of the course grade derives from work and activities in the classroom. Most importantly, class time allows you to interact with and learn from one another.
This module gives you an introduction to statistical techniques and their applications in the context of business and management problems. In addition, it is designed to develop your ability to make effective use of computer software for data analysis.

This module provides an introduction to the use of management accounting information for management purposes. This includes an examination of cost-volume profit analysis, the concepts of direct and indirect costs, and various costing methods. The importance of budgets to organisations and their impact on performance are also discussed.
This module aims to develop your understanding of contemporary management practice through the window of consultancy. It looks at who consultants are and at the major themes in consultancy before critiquing the industry. It examines the analytical skills needed and used by consultants and how consultancy interventions take place. This is tackled theoretically and through a series of practical activities, culminating in a major client project that provides a unifying perspective.
The aim of this module is to offer students from a wide range of backgrounds the opportunity to engage with the most important debates and issues in the study of the politics of the Middle East and Asia, and to locate and contextualise them within wider debates and scholarship of global politics. The module aims to develop enhance critical understanding of a series of key issues in the politics of the contemporary Middle East and Asia, as well as familiarising students with a wide range of case studies.

The principal objective of this module is to provide a relatively comprehensive and integrated foundation to the study of international relations by introducing students to its basic conceptual vocabulary and theoretical concerns and by applying this conceptual knowledge to an understanding of changes and developments in the international system.
The module covers the historical development of the discipline in the 20th century into the 21st century, moving from the orthodoxy that has come to dominate mainstream Anglo-American international relations (Realism and Liberalism) through to the various challenges that have emerged from critical schools of thought. The module examines how different theories of international relations illuminate and interrogate some of the central ethico-political problems of the 'international' in modern history.
Looking at microeconomic issues relating to markets and firms, and macroeconomic issues relating to money, banking and monetary policy, this module helps you to analyse economic issues from a business perspective. It demonstrates why economic concepts and principles are relevant to business issues by applying introductory economic theory to a range of issues that affect economic aspects of the business environment. Particular emphasis is given to interpreting the economic behaviour of individuals and firms, using theory to interpret events and evaluate policies.
This module forms a self-contained introduction to marketing. It examines components of the marketing system, concepts of buying behaviour, analysis of market opportunities, market segmentation, the marketing mix and marketing strategy. Consideration is also given to a number of special topics, including services marketing, retailing and international marketing. It aims to develop your appreciation and understanding of the conceptual and descriptive language of marketing and how it is used within a business and management context.
This module provides you with the opportunity to further develop your knowledge of marketing management and its conceptual frameworks and techniques as well as to apply and adapt your knowledge of these frameworks to a diverse range of marketing management contexts. Going to market will be examined in terms of business buyer behaviour, consumer buyer behaviour, brands and brand management, channel selection and management, and international markets.
The aim of this module is to provide a broad grounding in some important aspects of the discipline of politics that are conceived of as both an attempt to understand the nature of politics and to assess the worth of various political arrangements. It involves consideration of notions such as politics, citizenship, democracy, government, state, welfare, individualism, utilitarianism, conservatism, socialism and, social democracy, together with an examination of the various ways in which political studies have been understood as a disciplined investigation of things political. The module covers four broad topics: freedom, markets and the state; citizenship, nationalism and democracy; equality and welfare; and politics and political science.
The module is divided into two sections over two terms. In the first term students will read, examine and discuss thinkers who make a contribution to the understanding of the notions of liberty and the individual (Hobbes, Locke, J S Mill, and Hayek). In the second term students will explore the thought of thinkers who are associated with the ideas of equality and community (Rousseau, Marx, the Fabians, and Rawls).
This module introduces students to the main approaches to development. It provides students with an overview of the main theoretical approaches, especially modernisation theory, world systems analysis, feminist theories, and post-colonialism. It relates these theories to issues and case studies including the debt question, the impact of globalisation, global governance, corporate social responsibility, poverty and inequality, social movements and the activities of NGOs.
The module comprises two interrelated parts. The first term deals with the main theoretical approaches to development. Topics here include global integration, disengagement, democracy-autocracy, aid-trade, the case of drugs, Islam, southern organisations, and theories of modernisation and dependency.
The second term pursues links between the conceptual issues raised in term one and connects them to global- and national-focused perspectives on the politics of development. The instability of third world states will be examined in terms of competing legacies from the pre-colonial and colonial periods and high social expectations of development. Perspectives and examples will be drawn from Africa and Latin America.
This module examines the origins, workings and policies of the European Union. It begins by considering the treaties that led to the contemporary union and focuses on the key strains of thought that have given rise to contemporary debates about the form the European Union ought to take.
At a time of unprecedented financial crisis and the prospect of a British exit from the EU itself, the module offers a comprehensive focus on all key issues from European politics, government, and economics, to public policy. It includes an analysis of the process and dynamics of European integration, especially since the collapse of the Soviet Union; an account of the various European institutions which have developed (including the work of the Commission in Brussels), a discussion of key public policy areas (with an emphasis on the European Social Model) and finally a focus on European party politics, covering influential European ideologies such as Social Democracy, Christian Democracy and also Euro-scepticism.
This module aims to deepen students' understanding of the major ideas, arrangements, policies and controversies which have characterised post-war British politics.
The module examines the evolution of the politics of the United Kingdom from an era broadly characterised by consensus and stability (1945-70) to one which has proved much more turbulent in a variety of ways (1970 onwards). This examination is set within the context of rival political traditions and of competing theories of representative government. Topics covered in the first term include changes in electoral behaviour and developments in the political parties, as well as consideration of the problems of governing the component parts of the United Kingdom (Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland). In the second term the focus is on the key institutions of central government (parliament and the executive) and on the UK's changing relationship with Europe. The last part of the course examines the development of public policy in the areas of welfare and the economy.

Lancaster University offers a range of programmes, some of which follow a structured study programme, and others which offer the chance for you to devise a more flexible programme. We divide academic study into two sections - Part 1 (Year 1) and Part 2 (Year 2, 3 and sometimes 4). For most programmes Part 1 requires you to study 120 credits spread over at least three modules which, depending upon your programme, will be drawn from one, two or three different academic subjects. Students will be required to pay the cost of the flights to the partnership university as well as visa costs if studying in the USA.
