What Will You Study

This degree in Spanish Studies with Chinese combines the study of the languages and cultures of Spain and the Hispanic world with the study of Chinese language and culture.

Taught by lecturers who conduct internationally respected research, your degree course gives you the opportunity to acquire both high level language skills and a thorough understanding of Spanish and Latin American cultures and societies within a global context. Besides your core language courses, you'll be able to choose from a broad range of specialist cultural, historical and political courses promoting comparative understanding of countries within Europe and beyond.

You begin your degree with courses in Advanced or Intensive Spanish oral and written language, as well as our core module, Introduction to Hispanic Cultural Studies. You will also study the core Chinese module, which is designed for beginners with little or no prior knowledge of Chinese language or culture.

In the second year, you will study Spanish language modules and the core module, 'Power and Resistance in Spain and Spanish America'. You will be able to choose three further comparative modules, such as 'Understanding Culture' or 'Cinema and Society in Europe and Latin America: Thematic and Formal Perspectives'. You will also study Chinese language modules, which will build on the intensive language introduction given in the first year.

Spending your third year abroad either studying or working in a Spanish-speaking country is compulsory. The year abroad makes a major contribution to your command of the Spanish language, while deepening your intercultural sensitivity.

In your final year, you will continue to develop your core Spanish language oral and written skills. You can combine this with a choice of specialist culture modules, such as 'Social Movements and Committed Writing in Mexico since 1958' and ' Treachery, War and Exile in Spanish Poetry . In this fourth year of your degree, you will also study Chinese Culture and Society alongside a further Chinese language module.
