How two days in London completely changed my outlook on my future prospects

My name is Freya Scott and I am a first year Marketing & Design student part of GROW Your Future. During the Easter holidays, I had an amazing opportunity to attend Capital Connections. This was a fully funded trip to discover several head offices including Civil Service, Samsung, Unilever and Oracle.

Going into this trip I assumed that in order to work in a corporate London setting, people needed to come from certain backgrounds or to have existing links within each industry. I was quickly proven wrong hearing from various interns who came from all backgrounds with different experiences, all of which were happy to explain how they got to where they are now. I was not aware of just how many opportunities were available to people from any degree discipline, showing me that all doors are open and sometimes just knowing where to look can make a really big difference!

Another fantastic element of this trip was the networking event hosted by Samsung. During this, we met with alumni all of whom went to Lancaster University. This was valuable as everyone understood where we are (or were) as students- and it was very inspirational to see the possibilities available to us for the future if we continue to work hard. This also really motivated me as it showed me jobs like this are within reach and are not just exclusive to those who get amazing grades all the time, or those who have pre-existing connections.A group of students sit in a presentation at the Samsung offices

What I also really enjoyed was the time we had as a cohort to explore London and to get to know each other. Meeting students on other courses and from different years helped me to connect with people who I might not have crossed paths with if this trip had not happened, and the entire group was so welcoming and friendly.Some of the attendees of the Capital Connections trip stand around a traditional, red London phone box and pose for a photograph

Overall, this trip gave me the confidence and motivation to do as well as possible for myself for the future. The advice given by alumni and current workers was invaluable and really helped me to envision the fact that nothing is impossible and companies look for more than just perfect grades.
