Professor Andrew Baggaley
Professor of Mathematics and AIResearch Overview
I am Professor of Mathematics and AI in MARS: Mathematics for AI in Real-world Systems, and Director of Studies for the MARS degree programme. My research combines large-scale simulation, stochastic modelling and statistical and machine-learning inference. In quantum fluids, I study turbulence and vortex dynamics in superfluid helium and Bose–Einstein condensates. In mathematical biology, I mainly focus on the spread of tree and plant disease, but have also worked on microswimmers such as algae and bacteria. For publications, research highlights and PhD opportunities, see my website: https://abag.github.io.
Career Details
Andrew Baggaley joined Lancaster University in 2025 as Professor of Mathematics and AI in MARS. He studied at Newcastle University, completing an MMath and then a PhD in applied mathematics (2009) with Anvar Shukurov and Carlo Barenghi. After a postdoctoral position modelling the spread of farming in Neolithic Europe, he was a lecturer at the University of Glasgow (2012–2015) and then at Newcastle University (2015–2025), latterly as Reader in Applied Mathematics. His work has been funded by EPSRC, Leverhulme Trust, STFC, NERC and Defra. More information is on his website: https://abag.github.io.
