Thanks to the generosity of our supporters through the Lancaster University Opportunity Fund, we have been proud to establish the Master’s Scholarship for Black British Students, designed not only to support students throughout their postgraduate studies, but also to empower them to thrive both personally and academically.

As part of Lancaster University’s comprehensive programme of widening participation, the scholarship reflects our commitment to ensuring that individuals from all backgrounds have the opportunity to access, succeed in, and benefit from higher education. It forms part of a broader portfolio of scholarship opportunities – including the Lancaster Global Scholarship and the Lancaster Opportunity Scholarship – through which we foster an environment where talented individuals can realise their full potential.

This year’s recipient of the Master’s Scholarship for Black British Students is Ruth Adu-Dwumaa, who is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Architecture. We had the pleasure of speaking with Ruth to learn more about her experiences at Lancaster, her aspirations for the future, and the role her scholarship has played in her journey.

“My name is Ruth Adu-Dwumaa, and I’m currently in my fourth year of architecture at Lancaster University as a postgraduate student. My time at Lancaster has been rewarding. The course pushes me to think creatively and refine my designs iteratively, which I’ve grown to appreciate. Balancing rigorous academics with my passion for fitness (you’ll often find me at the gym!) has made this year wonderfully busy and fulfilling.

“A standout moment for me so far was presenting my project to my tutors and external guests. The feedback included admiration for my graphic style, something I greatly appreciated as it is a feature I am always meticulous about. Overall, the feedback was a mix of praise and constructive critique, leaving me eager to develop the work further.

“Receiving the Master’s Scholarship for Black British Students has been transformative. Beyond alleviating future financial pressure for me and my family, it has reinforced my determination to use my skills to support under-resourced communities like in some areas in Ghana, my country of ethnic origin.

“Currently I am involved in a fundraising project to build a new school in a small town where the existing deteriorating structure poses real dangers. Just recently, a collapsing ceiling injured a young girl. Witnessing such stark disparities, where some risk their safety for an education while I’m granted incredible opportunities like this scholarship, fuels my drive to give back through architecture.

“This funding is more than just support; it’s a powerful reminder that others believe in my potential and are committed to equity in education. After graduation, I plan to specialise in architectural digital design, creating renders, graphics and architectural drawings for projects that prioritize communities in need.

“To the donors who made this scholarship possible, thank you. Your generosity isn’t just an investment in my future; it very well may be investing into the futures of so many others.”

The generosity of our alumni and donors plays a vital role in empowering students like Ruth. Her story is a powerful testament to the immediate impact of philanthropy – and to its lasting influence, which can echo far into the future. Thank you to all who support our students and make these opportunities possible.
