LangSoc: A new society for language-loving students
Posted on

Lancaster University has student societies dedicated to specific languages. For example, we have a French Society as well as a German Society. Recently, a group of DeLC students decided to set up a society which celebrates all languages. The result, known as ‘LangSoc’, has already had a number of vibrant socials and they are expanding day by day. Here, the President of LangSoc answers some questions about how it began and what they have planned for upcoming socials!
1. Why did you decide to set up LangSoc?
We decided that a society could work after one of the DeLC karaokes, so we discussed what we could do and how it could work. A few of us decided to take on some jobs so that we could get everything running smoothly. About a month later, we’ve held our first few events and they’ve been a success so far!
2. How often does the society meet?
We try to meet as often as possible, which tends to be around once a week.
3. What socials have you had so far and what have you got planned for future socials?
So far we have had our launch event with card games, a wii night, and a karaoke night which were really fun. We also helped to promote a quiz with students from a University in Toulouse! In terms of what’s to come, we have a few plans such as a movie night and we hope to host a picnic or barbecue outdoors once the weather improves. The best way to stay up-to-date is to follow our Instagram page (@langsoclu), as that’ll be where we do our event promotion!
4. How many languages are currently represented amongst your members?
So far, it’s mostly just languages taught in the department; so, French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Chinese, but there has been a plethora of languages sung at our karaoke night, such as Welsh, Ukrainian, and even Finnish!
5. How will the Department of Languages and Cultures contribute to your success as a society?
Our relationship with the Department is still developing but we hope that we can share platforms to promote each other’s events
