Introduction

The study of Politics at Lancaster has always been global in outlook and local in impact, mixing the best elements of political science, political theory and public policy. Proudly rooted in the wider North-West region, but firmly international in the profile of its student and staff members, we engage in research and education activities that seek to understand better the role of government, the state and politicians in all our lives. Our expertise includes British Politics, American Politics, European Politics, the Politics of the Middle-East and North Africa, especially in policy areas related to immigration, national identity and borders.

Research Spotlight

Dr Erica Consterdine’s impactful research on immigration policy explores the governmentality of residency visas, the political economy of labour migration regimes, and how postcolonial imaginaries inform radicalised labour markets.

Building on her research on governmentality of migration regimes, her current research is centred around the questions of the nature and limits of the state in border regimes. She is particularly interested in bureaucratic violence, administrative burdens, politics of policymaking, outsourcing, and the politics of street level bureaucracy.
