Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC) is one of the best places in the UK to study geography and environmental sciences

Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC) is one of the best places in the UK to study geography and environmental sciences, according to the latest Guardian newspaper league table.

Lancaster University beat Oxford to reach third place in these subjects, in the 2014 Guardian University Guide.

A very high proportion of students were satisfied with their course (96%) and with their teaching (93%).  LEC scored ten out of ten for its spending per student.  It equalled Cambridge and beat Oxford for the proportion of students in work or further study six months after graduation (74%).

Professor Kevin Jones, director of Lancaster Environment Centre, said: “This result shows that our approach works, mixing the theoretical with the practical in the lecture room, laboratory and the field.

“Our academics are world class researchers who bring understanding of the latest developments in their discipline into their teaching. All our students get the opportunity to carry out fieldwork, either on our doorstep in the beautiful North West of England, rich in contrasting terrestrial and aquatic habitats, or in Europe, Amazonia, the Himalayas, North America, Asia and Iceland.”
