Lancaster University is ranked 9th in the UK and top in the North West for Geography and Environmental Science by the Complete University Guide 2018

The high ranking follows a series of outstanding results for Geography and Environmental Science in major league tables in the past year, firmly establishing Lancaster as one of the elite places to study these subjects.

Lancaster also improved its performance in Biological Sciences, rising three places to come 16th nationally.

The Complete University Subject Guide compares how universities perform in a series of areas including: student satisfaction; research quality; research intensity; entry standards and graduate prospects. All three subjects did particularly well in ‘graduate prospects’: the percentage of students in good jobs or further study six months after completing their degree.

Other leagues table successes in the past year include:

  • 1st equal in UK for Physical Geography and Environmental Science in the 2016 National Student Survey
  • 5th in UK for Geography, Environmental and Earth Sciences degrees in 2017 Guardian University Guide
  • 7th in the UK for Geography and Environmental Sciences in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017
  • In the world top 100 for both Geography and Environmental Science in the 2017 QS World Rankings

“This is a terrific result that highlights the outstanding employment prospects for our graduates,” said Professor Phil Barker, Director of the Lancaster Environment Centre.

“What students do after their degrees is a key part in how we make a positive difference to global challenges and environmental issues.”

Overall Lancaster University came 9th nationally out of 129 universities, and top in the North West, in the Complete University Guide. It performed especially well for the quality of its research, and in the amount it spends on academic services, including its library, IT and cultural facilities.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark E. Smith said: “These league tables reflect our success in offering a world-class student experience.  As well as recruiting the best staff from across the world, we offer outstanding student facilities and excellent teaching which will equip graduates well for their future careers.”
