About: This is a joint event, co-organized by the Heritage Language 2 Consortium (HL2C) and the Second Language Learning and Teaching (SLLAT) Research Group.

Abstract:

Research on Portuguese Language Heritage (PLH) teachers around the world has shown that these professionals form a very diverse group in terms of their education and work contexts (Soares 2012; Melo-Pfeifer 2016; Silva 2016; Ferreira 2017). However, detailed and systematized knowledge about these teachers does not yet exist. The aim of the present study was to address this gap. With this purpose, an electronic questionnaire was created for PLH teachers to collect data that would enable these teachers to be characterized, namely in terms of their socio-demographic profile, their academic background, their relationship with other languages and cultures, their professional activity, beliefs about teaching PLH, and their professionaltraining needs. A sample of six PLH teachers from three countries, United Kingdom, South Africa, and the United States, was used to test the survey. Following this test, some changes were made to the questionnaire in order to reformulate ambiguous items. This communication will present the preliminary results of the research conducted with this survey and identify areas that need further investment.
