Work placement success for Linguistics and English Language students
In spring 2021 three second year undergraduate students from Linguistics and English Language took part in work experience placements as part of their degree. Despite Covid-19 restrictions, the students were able to conduct their placement via remote working, or in a socially-distanced office environment. The work was conducted as part of a second-year module where students work with a local business or charity whilst gaining credits for their degree and gain experience needed for future careers. Linguistics and English Language staff work closely with Faculty careers staff to find work placements which are valuable for the student and the employer alike.
Tsvetelina Yordanova worked with Crowberry Consulting, a management consultancy firm based in Chorley. She attended their office daily during the Easter vacation to work as a digital content creator.
Tsvetelina said:
During my placement, I had the role of a digital content creator and copywriter for Crowberry Consulting Ltd. My job was to write promotional articles that would be published on the company's LinkedIn page. Before the start of the placement, I was scared that I wouldn't be a right fit for the job or that my writing wouldn't be up to the company's standards. However, from the moment I walked into the office, I was made to feel welcome and pretty soon I got comfortable around everyone there. I also received a lot of support and advice, and everyone did everything they could to get better. Not only did I learn a lot about the sector I want to get into, but I also learned a lot about job-seeking and tips on how to become more employable. I am really glad I did the placement, as I feel like I got a lot out of it.James Haley volunteered as a telephone befriender for Age UK and worked to support vulnerable older adults during the pandemic. James hopes to train as either a speech and language therapist or as a teacher after graduating. He therefore wanted to tailor his placement towards working with different groups in the community and gaining experience of people with varying communication needs.
Chloe Hampton worked as a social media coordinator at Triple Bottom Line (TBL), an environmental consultancy firm. Chloe worked remotely one day a week during the spring and designed the company’s social media strategy from scratch. She had to work closely with all colleagues at TBL in order to tie in the launch of their social media with a new website. TBL valued Chloe’s work so much that they have now employed her as a permanent social media manager. Chloe is now working for TBL alongside her studies to further build up her experience before graduation.
