Artwork depicting the diversity of everyday life and the surreal nature of human expression earned two students top honours.

Following the successful opening of this year’s Fine Art Degree Show Dean of the Faculty of Art and Social Sciences Professor Simon Guy selected two winners whose work will be added to the Faculty’s Fine Art Collection. 

The prize, now in its second year, was won by Alice Adams and Gabriella Papa.                    

 Alice’s painting ‘Jeremy’ is a vibrant abstract work utilising mixed media. 

Gabriella’s trio of video works features hyper-slow film of faces smiling behind mirror-effect transparent plastic.

Professor Guy said: "The work in the 2016 Fine Art degree show was of a consistently high quality and revealed a great range of creative practice across the cohort of 44 students.

“Selecting this year’s Dean’s prize for Fine Art was therefore such a challenge that we have named two equal winners - Alice Adams for her joyous paintings which celebrate the diversity of everyday life and Gabriela Papa for her video installation which reflects on the whimsical and surreal nature of human expression.

“Both artists fuse creativity and craft to produce inspiring work which has the additional benefit of offering a positive and uplifting experience.”

This year’s Degree Show, OMNIA XLIV, broke records for attendance at the Peter Scott Gallery and other campus locations at Lancaster University with more than 500 visitors on the opening night and numbers rising.  The show runs until June 22 (open 11am to 5pm).
