L-PACE Flexible Funding

The L-PACE will deploy a range of mechanisms to support new activities which include a mix of smaller, data science mini-projects, partnership funding with larger Lancaster based networks like the Network Plus for Analytical Behavioural Science (NABS+), collaborative small grant funding to provide proof-of-concept data for larger research bids, and a rapid response funding mechanism for responding to urgent and emergent concerns.

Data Science Mini-Projects:
Lancaster University has already built a Police Data Science pathway (with Lancashire Constabulary and Merseyside Police) which leads to a 3-month placement-based MSc project. L-PACE will run multiple MSc-level student placement projects over the next few years to address a practical policing need and provide the platform for more extensive collaborations in the future, as well as an important recruiting and training mechanisms for police forces.
Projects will be specified by an external organisation, will be supervised by an LU academic and will be offered to all relevant MSc cohorts Students from MSc AI, MSc Data Science, MSc Cyber Security, MSc Psychology and Behavioural Analytics

ARI (Areas of Research Interest) Pipeline Funding:
L-PACE will establish a fund to facilitate the development of research work which has its roots in the MSc collaborations, or in some of the other collaborations between L-PACE members and Police forces.

Policing Futures Innovation Fund:
L-PACE will establish a collaborative small grants call (involving at least one force, one technology company and one academic). Grants will be awarded to proof-of-concept projects that could be submitted to larger funding schemes, including the Police STAR fund or the Home Office Accelerated Capability Environment.

Rapid Response Funding Mechanism for Police Research:
L-PACE will create a fast-track funding mechanism for research into any of the ARIs. The rapid response funds will have a streamlined application process, a flexible funding periods depending on the urgency of the problem and rolling deadlines.
