Current Research
My research interests are related to the sociology of practice and the philosophy of process, including work on time and social organisation (e.g. Time and Society, 2019).
I’ve developed these ideas in substantive areas related to the sociology of consumption (see Cambridge Handbook of Sociology, 2017), including work on energy demand (e.g. Time and Society, 2020; Journal of Energy History, 2021; Journal of Organizational Sociology, 2024) and public health (e.g. Critical Public Health, 2016; Sociology of Health and Illness, 2021; Social Theory and Health 2024).
Two books – a monograph, Practice Theory and Process Philosophy: Towards a Sociology of Becoming, and a co-authored book, Practice Theory and the Biosocial: Microbes, Matter, and Milieu – bring together and extend recent theoretical work, one on practice and process, the other on practice and the biosocial.
Looking ahead, my research continues to explore the implications of practice theory and process philosophy for public health - particularly in relation to the organisation and transformation of what are often referred to as non-communicable diseases.
