Highlights of the programme: ‘II developed skills in conducting research in Sociology while expanding my interest in Urban Sociology. I've gained hope that the cities I've lived in or visited can become more economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable.’

‘I believe there is a wide array of career prospects for both Sociology and MCS students because the degree has several transferable skills such as abilities to conduct research, write extensive pieces, create creative pieces, work in teams and more which can be the foundation for different jobs that are not necessarily linked to academia or social work.’

Highlights of the programme: ‘As a recruiter specialising in gaming, a field that is equal parts technical and creative; a base understanding of ideologies surrounding labour has helped me better understand the wants and needs of job seekers, and in turn build strong working relationships within the gaming community.’

Current role: Research Manager in Department of Health and Social Care, UK Government

Highlights of the programme: ‘One of the main skills and experiences I got from my degree was knowledge and experience of research methods, both relating to qualitative and quantitative skills. For example, during two of my undergraduate modules, I had experiences of interviewing relatives and transcribing interview data to inform assignments and essays.’

Building upon the core research skills and valuable firsthand experiences gained during her degree, Sophie has chosen to further her career in research within the public sector and government.

Highlights of the programme: ‘During the first year of my degree I got involved with the Student Television Station LA1TV which made me realise that I wanted to pursue a career in TV and broadcasting. As a result and because of the wide range of modules that Lancaster offers, during the rest of my degree I picked modules that were focused on topics which would help me with my ambitions. Studying topics such as digital media gave me opportunities to get practical experience by using editing software and filming content as well as a better understanding of digital industries and content. ’

Maintaining social media channels and promoting brand campaigns using advertising and copywriting.

Highlights of the programme: ’I studied topics like visual cultures which was really exciting to me and made me realize that that's the kind of industry I wanted to go in and helped with my writing skills. I need to write a lot in my job and both short form and long form in terms of copywriting, and in articles and blogs.’

‘Cross cultural communication related jobs may be an interesting direction for the students, specific jobs could be journalists reporting about cultural events, international film or TV producers/ distributors/ variety shows planners that focus on international TV formats, or like what I am doing now, where I became an international affairs project manager that assists foreign and Chinese culture communication.'
