Net Zero

A research programme exploring the ways the transition to net zero carbon emissions will affect our working lives, and identifying the ways Government and employers can mitigate insecurity and maximise opportunities through the changes ahead.

Managing the climate crisis will require transformational shifts in our economy. As we aim to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, new jobs will be created to enable those structural changes to take place.

But the transition to net zero extends beyond the development of new roles in energy, transport and carbon capture. Many organisations will re-think operational practices, in turn driving significant changes in existing jobs that skills that are needed to complete them.

For some workers and communities, these changes may present more risks than opportunities. As we move away from fossil fuels, skilled workers across the country may need support to find new work. Mitigating the risk of insecurity will be essential to delivering an effective and fair transition.

This research programme will explore these challenges, identifying the ways Government and employers can prepare for the labour market impacts of the transition to net zero carbon emissions.
