Abstract: One of the discussions at the Away Day was on collaboration within the department and development of interdisciplinary research. Continuing that conversation, in this presentation, I will present insights from a study of discipline-focused and interdisciplinary research in the Information Systems field. I will first theorize four different types of knowledge contribution that researchers can create, encompassing both an intra-disciplinary and an inter-disciplinary view. I will then present an analysis of a wide-ranging sample of research studies published in 176 papers in the top Information Systems journals to investigate the nature of their contribution vis-à-vis these types. Based on the analysis, I will explain why each type of knowledge contribution is important and provide guidance for scholars, particularly but not limited to Information Systems scholars, in planning their research strategies for these contributions.
