Introducing the SIME blog

LUMS building exterior

Hello, and welcome to the SIME blog! Here we aim to draw on the expertise of our members and share practice from across the many disciplines that make up our number. We have colleagues from right across LUMS, including Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Economics and OWT. We also have members from professional services such as Careers and Quality Assurance.

About me

My name is Mike, and I’m a lecturer in the Marketing department here in LUMS. Prior to my life in academia, I worked as a professional writer and digital marketer in fields as diverse as video games, healthcare, and higher education. Since joining SIME, I’ve absolutely loved attending the many events put on each month and contributing to the growing community of scholars, all sharing a common interest in teaching and becoming better at what we do.

The birth of a blog

The idea for the SIME blog emerged from a session I ran back in February, where I shared my experience writing blogs for a whole range of different audiences throughout my career. From early blogs about my life as a student to blogs for videogame publishers, healthcare professionals and academic research groups, I’ve written literally hundreds of blogs in my time, and I was delighted to be asked to share my experience with SIME members.

Based on our workshop session it soon became clear that we have an awful lot of experience and expertise between us, and the SIME blog is the perfect place to bring our many members together to share knowledge and build connections between different disciplines here in LUMS.

The blog you see before you now is the result of that session!

How our blogs will work

Each week we will be posing questions to members in our dedicated Teams space. These responses will form the basis of a blog on a particular topic. For example, our first blog ‘Getting Started in Teaching’.

Over time, we aim to build up a bank of blogs that can be used as a resource for colleagues interested in teaching. We will also invite guest bloggers to contribute to our project, while individual members are also welcome to write on any subject relating to what we do.

Get involved

If you’re interested in teaching, then we’d love to hear from you! Joining SIME is easy: simply email your details to Teresa Aldren and we will invite you to our Teams space, where you can meet other like-minded members of our community and join discussions around issues that are so important to us here at Lancaster. As well as the SIME blog, we host numerous events and workshops throughout the year and you are more than welcome to attend. We also attend education-related conferences and run research projects related to teaching practice with the aim of shaping university policy and strategy in this area.

If any of this interests you, then you are more than welcome to join us. Email Teresa Aldren to join, or, if you have any questions at all, send a message to our Director, Radka Newton.

We look forward to meeting you!

Mike and the SIME team
