Religions and (post)-faith

Literary Studies has recently undergone a ‘sacred turn’ as religious discourse, themes and questions reassert themselves in surprising, paradoxical and sometimes troubling ways. Many of us are part of this renewed focus on the religious from the Renaissance to postmodernity.

We edit Literature and Theology, collaborate with the Islamic literary journal Qalam and Quill, and have hosted distinguished international scholars such as Miguel Vatter (Deakin University) and Colin Jager (Rutgers).

Annual Literature and Religion lecture

The Literature and Religion Lecture is an annual public event, hosted at the historic Lancaster Priory.

Over the years, the lecture has welcomed an impressive range of distinguished speakers, including Sarah Perry, Rachel Mann, Abdul-Rehman Malik, Rowan Williams (pictured right) and Paul Muldoon.

Literature and the Bible

We have considerable expertise in the overlap of literature and religion and especially the Bible – from apocalyptic fiction to the biblical Esther's afterlives, to narratives of providence in the Victorian novel.
